Corinne
I went back to school to become a Community Support Worker, and during my practicum, I found Surrey Urban Mission—or maybe they found me. While doing my practicum, I volunteered casually, working days, evenings, and even overnight shifts. I helped wherever I was needed—prepping meals in the kitchen, working in the shelters, or supporting the volunteers.
I know what it’s like to be judged, to face struggles, and to feel underestimated. I’ve dealt with my own demons and the challenges of having a broken, dysfunctional family. I’ve been that 'church mouse,' unsure of where I fit in or how to deal with things. I know what it’s like to build walls and keep people out.
When the opportunity came to become the Welcome Hub Dining Host, I realized this role gave me a chance to open up. Being on the floor helped me connect more deeply with our guests and volunteers, and slowly, I learned to build trust.
Working at the Welcome Hub has given me a sense of purpose. It’s become my own way of building a family and supporting others. Sometimes, it’s the little things we do that make the biggest difference.
We all need someone to look up to, and we all need a purpose and a place to belong.
“It’s okay if the only thing you do today is breathe.”
