Jack has over 20 years of experience in the non-profit sector, working with organizations such as The Salvation Army, United We Can and Mission Thrift Store. He brings expertise in governance, leadership, and social enterprise, committed to advancing SUMS' mission and supporting its guests.

Shannon transitioned from healthcare to a community-focused role, driven by her passion for raising awareness and instilling hope. Guided by her faith, she creates an atmosphere of love and support for those in need.

Director of Communications

Janet Brown joined SUMS as Director of Communications in October 2024 after nearly four decades as an award-winning reporter. Passionate about helping marginalized communities, she is eager to raise the profile of SUMS in Surrey, where she resides.

Director of Human Resources

Paul began his career on the frontline and is now dedicated to employee growth and engagement. He leads the HR team in driving initiatives that promote talent development and contribute to the overall success of the organization.

Nathan Stein

Director of Strategic Advancement

Nathan oversees Surrey Urban Mission's new projects and strategic initiatives through the planning, development, and evaluation phases. He is committed to creating a future in which everyone has a safe, affordable place to call home.

Daniel Zahara

Daniel Zahara

Director of Information and Technology

Daniel began at SUMS when it operated as a temporary winter shelter and now leads its information and technology systems. He focuses on using automation and technology to enhance services, improve care quality, and uplift the community.

Board Chair

Stephen has worked as a commercial realtor for almost 20 years He has been a contributing columnist for Business in Vancouver, The Surrey Business Journal and a podcast guest talking about commercial real estate, economics, and leasing. He is the past President of the CCIM Western Canada Chapter, a former director of the Fraser Valley Real Estate Board and has extensive experience volunteering for many organizations and working on multiple non-profit boards in BC.

Robert has had two careers: 25 years in the UK Armed Forces as a decorated veteran and 34 years in Canadian real estate development. As Vice President of WestStone Group, he has led award-winning projects across BC, Alberta, and Arizona, including Surrey City Centre’s West Village. With 5 million sq. ft. in development, he has served as Chair of the Downtown Surrey BIA and Surrey City Centre Economic Development Committee and is a member of Surrey’s Development Advisory Committee.

Dianne Swanlund has been a Surrey resident for over 40 years and recently retired from a career in Insurance and Estate Advisory Services. A dedicated community volunteer, she has served as a Director for Surrey Urban Mission Society, on church boards, and as an organizer for local food security initiatives. Currently, she is Board President of One Plane Away, a charity supporting young families in Nunavut’s fly-in communities. “To do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with your God.”

William has clinical and operational leadership experience supporting community health and wellness initiatives across a variety of settings. William leads services and programs to enhance the lives of people affected by or at risk of disability. In addition, William has been a life-long Surrey resident and is proud to join SUMS as Board Director.

Daniel Kinsey

Director

Dan Kinsey is a results-driven executive with 20+ years of leadership in distribution, logistics, and recycling, including 17 years with The Salvation Army. A strategic advisor and champion of the triple bottom line, he excels in operational efficiency, financial oversight, and stakeholder collaboration. Eager to contribute, he proudly serves on the board of Surrey Urban Mission Society to support its vital community impact.

Andy is the lead pastor of Green Timbers Covenant Church in Surrey, where he has served for eighteen years. He loves the living in the Lower Mainland and enjoying God's beautiful creation and the wonderful mix of people and cultures God has put here. He is excited to serve alongside the staff, clients, and volunteers at SUMS to share God's love and welcome to all people.
