When Things Get A Little Hairy

By Mike Musgrove

Most days at the mission can get a little hairy and today was no exception. I arrived at the mission close to 7 and our groggy shelter guests were snoozing or sipping coffee. I went to my office and started up my computer, but before I could type in the password I heard someone from the back yell, "Shut the $%#^ up!”

Obviously concerned I hustled to the back. I recognized the voice, so I asked James, “what is going on?”

“That guy won’t stop picking on me,” He said.

'That guy' quickly identified himself with a few expletives of his own and the threats started.

“Stop” I said.

To my surprise they listened and so did every one else. I firmly believe the Lord placed the following words on my tongue: “We didn’t bring you together so you could tear each other apart, and I am not even going to try to sort out how you got to this point, but if you tear yourselves apart in here, how do you think it is going to go out there?” I pointed out the doors, “Rethink this moment, guys!”

They both nodded in recognition and peace was restored. I went back to my computer, entered the password, and the screen came to light. On it was a verse I had looked up yesterday:

"If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone." Romans 12:18 (NIV)

I thank the LORD for this opportunity to serve. All glory goes to Him.
